i played cornet for 5 1/2 years, and then i got braces, and moved to baritone. it has been 10 months now, and i am still:
a) cant play double forte
b) have a very un-starcarto like starcarto
c) cant double tounge, and
d) cant get any lower than bottom a
has any one had braces in the past, and can give me a few tips? we are approching AMEB exams, and if i cant get the hang of these, i am going to fail fourth grade.

Braces
Braces are a brass players worst nightmare! However they affect different people in different ways. Often people will move onto playing a lower instrument for a short time. However one friend of mine, an excellent cornet player, moved down to the Bb Bass after having braces fitted and no longer being able to play higher than a D (fourth line) on his cornet.
I have braces too and believe me they are a nightmare on the Soprano! I was unwilling to give up playing the Soprano so I am struggling through with braces! It has shortened my range... I cant play the top notes and the low ones are fuzzy, and wrecked my tone.
If you are on Baritone then you should be ok and not experience too many problems hopefully however you may want to wait until they are out!
