Cornet pieces

Post by Philippa »

Hiya! I've been playing the Bb cornet for about 8 years now, but I find that I like to play some different pieces other than grade 8 stuff. I've played Zelda Caprice by Percy CODE and La Belle Americaine by John HARTMANN, however I was wondering what piece to go onto next. It would be amazing for any ideas! I'm 16 and haven't gained any interest in atonal music, so I'd prefer it if you could tell me some more melodic tunes rather than minimalism, or studies.

Thank you so much!!

'The Paragon'
'Hailstorm'
'Napoli'

have a look at thge back or the Arban tutor but dont spend too much time with the carnival of venice....most people are quite sick to here its name again, and again, and again.

William Tell overture, thats worth a laugh , ewhat abot thay old study Nessum Dormat ?... most bands have it in the depths of the library.

Why not go over the same solo's but take a different approach, challenge yourself. hold high pauses longer than normal.... play the triplet leading up the the top C's in the 2nd movement of La Belle very slow and hold the C' as a pause. play the andante slower with more exagerated and OTT expressive dynamics. 12 bars from the end continue the runs up to C'.

Try 'Weiderkehr' normally seen as a young study, but one of the more difficult solo's to energise, really makes you look beyond the notes (which can easily be played as written).

good luck with your search.

There last note at http://www.bandsman.co.uk/bumble.htm is top C, and if I remember correctly, that is the highest note of the piece.

If you ever get a chance to play Concorde by Roy Newsome i strongly suggest you do. Its a great piece with a challenging double tongued ending. It tests stamina more than anything else but when played correctly is one of the most impressive solos you could hope to hear :)
