The Year 2000

Brass Band Midden-Brabant wins the 2000 National Belgium Championships
The Belgian National Championships took place on 3/12/00 at the Conservatory of Brussels with the winners winning by 11 clear points. The set piece was Robert Simpson's Volcano, with each band also playing an own choice item.

The top four bands were:

Festival Brass

Kortrijk Brass Band

The winners were conducted by Benny Wiami and gained 279 out of 300 points for Volcano. They chose Martin Ellerby's Tristan Encounters as their own choice, gaining 278 out of a possible 300.

The first division was won by Campine and the 3rd division by Scaldis

The adjudicators were David Read, Gareth Pritchard and John Maines.

Nigel Horne appointed Events Editor at Onlinebrass
Nigel Horne has joined the Onlinebrass team to work on the Events Calendar to help to publicise concerts and events to both the public and members of the movement.

Tredegar win at Treorchy Entertainments Contest
Tredegar Band won this year's Treorchy Enterterinments Contest with a traditional programme including Army of the Nile, Trumpey Voluntary, America, Irish Blessing and the Pines of Rome. Their soprano player, Iwan Fox, wone the prize for best soloist.

Bournemouth Concert Brass win at Reading
Bournemouth Concert Brass won at this year's Reading Brass Band Guild contest held on 9th November 2000 and adjudicated by Goff Richards and David Marshall.

Conducted by Leonard Adams, the winners nearly didn't make it with a last minute change of conductor and player loss.

Old Hall Brass at Power Ball 2000
Old Hall Brass, based in Orrell, Wigan played at Power Ball 2000 on 10th November at The Great Room, Le Meridien Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London W1.

Power Ball is a fundraising ball run by the EEIBA (Electrical and Electronic Industries Benevolent Association). The band played during dinner in front of 1200 guests from throughout the electrical industry and were extremely well received. The band were proud to play at such a prestigious event and to perform alongside the Band of the Welsh Guards who provided the fanfare team and performed a cabaret item later in the evening.

Verwood Concert Brass charity gift
Verwoood Concert Brass recently donated over £200 to Verwood Guides following their Autumn Concert. The Guides hope to put this money towards the building of a new meeting hall in February 2001.

The band is on the lookout for other charitable causes, contact Peter Stubbs.

Trinity Girls produce video
The Trinity Girls Band recorded a recent concert held at Wigan in both audio and video. The band has been running for 40 years and has recently welcomed some old players back in to the band. The Wigan concert featured 3 conductors and featured many standard band numbers.

Unity Brass sponsorship renewal
Unity Brass has announced that it's sponsorship with Oddfellows is to be continued into 2001. To mark this they plan a nationwide tour of the UK with the light entertainer Pam Ayres that will include Bradford and Wigan. The band has also announced that it is to lose it's founding conductor, Rob Boulter and are now looking for a replacement for the New Year. Further contact details appear on our vacancies page.

Pemberton two out of two
Pemberton Old Wigan Band recently won two contests on consecutive weekends. After winning the Whychavon Entertainment Contest they went on to win the Fleetwood contest with Land of the Long White cloud, after being drawn first to play.

The adjudicator at Fleetwood was Malcolm Brownbill.

Stonesfield Silver holds open rehearsal

Stonesfield Silver Band are holding an open rehearsal on Monday 9th October at 7.45. The rehearsal will be held at Exeter Hall, Kidlington, Oxfordshire where members of the public can hear the band rehearsing the test piece they are to play at the Royal Albert Hall on the 20th October.

Plymouth Band twins Exmouth Entertainment Contest
The first ever Exmouth Entertainment Contest was held on 9th September and won by The Plymouth Band of the Royal British Legion Crownhill.

The band also took away three other prizes: best trombone section, 3rd prize in the 16 piece contest and best 3rd section band.

The day was rounded off by a massed band concert conducted by the adjudicator, Roy Roe.

Abraham Darby Band to hold joint concert with Desford
The Abraham Darby School Band is celebrating 25 years of banding with a series of concerts. On 29th of October the will be holding a joint concert at the Telford Town Centre with Desford Colliery Band.

The band was in the final seven at the National Music for Youth Festival this year. Other musical groups from the school, the jazz band and showband, performed equally well for the school at the festival.

Freckleton Band wins Land O' Burns contest
Freckleton Band from Preston in Lancashire beat 13 other bands to win with their performance of Blitz and ORB that impressed the adjudicators, David Read and Bruce Fraser. The band also won the best cornet, horn and instrumentalist prizes at the contest organised by The Dalmellington Band

The band is justly proud of its result. "This shows you that smaller championship bands can compete against the best bands in the country and come away with a result", Ian Therlfall, the secretary of the band, told us.

Book published on the life and works of James Shepherd
Chris Helme's new book "James Shepherd the Famous Newbiggin-by-the-Sea Cornet Player" has recently been published.

The book traces his early days as a learner in his home town to playing at the Albert Hall. It includes photographs tracing his life from childhood to his present position with the Kings of Brass.

Plymouth Band loss is Royal Marines' gain
The Plymouth Band has recently learnt that its principal cornet, Daniel Johnson, has been accepted for the Royal Marines in September. Alex Macrae said, "everyone from the Band wishes him all the best in the future and hopes he will he will remain in contact with us."

St. Keverne Youth Band goes to Canada
The St. Keverne Youth Band has been invited perform at the Nova Scotia International Tattoo in 2001. Chris Broscomb think it's big not just for St. Keverne or Cornwall but for British Banding, "I don't know if they are a 'first' for this event but I am sure that they will be brilliant ambassadors for Britain".

The obvious problem is funding the travel costs estimated at this stage to be close to £25,000. To help raise the funds the band is keen to hear from sponsors all over the UK.

Internet Band meets for the 3rd time
For the third time bandsman used the Internet to meet to make music. The first time was in 1996 when we met and broadcast in real audio. Then in 1997 we met and broadcast pictures as well as sounds. In 2000 we met to take part in the Whit Friday Marches.
